Everyday Luxury: Why I'm Not Saving the Good Stuff for Later

Somewhere along the way, a lot of us learned to save the good stuff.

The nice candle stays in the box. The fancy perfume sits untouched on the dresser. The good dishes come out twice a year. The beautiful jewelry stays in a drawer, waiting for an occasion important enough to deserve it.

I have apparently missed this lesson entirely.

I have never once in my life been good at saving the good stuff.

I ate every piece of my Halloween candy before my sister Janice had touched half of hers. Same with Easter candy. Same with basically anything good that ever came into my possession. If it was enjoyable, I enjoyed it immediately, in full, with zero strategy for pacing myself or "saving room."

My money worked the same way growing up. If I had it, I spent it. I was never the kid with a savings jar quietly accumulating interest and self-restraint.

For a long time, I thought that made me the irresponsible one. The impulsive one. The one without the discipline everyone else seemed to have mastered.

To be frank, I'm done feeling guilty about that.

Why Do We Save Nice Things for Special Occasions?

Sometimes saving nice things is practical. I understand not burning the $50 candle for eight hours straight because you forgot about it. That's not everyday luxury. That's a fire hazard.

But I think sometimes there's something else underneath our instinct to save the good stuff: a quiet belief that today isn't quite worthy of it.

This ordinary Tuesday isn't the occasion.

The perfume can wait until date night. The jewelry can wait until we have somewhere to go. The good bottle of wine can wait until people come over. We'll use all of it later, once the calendar gives us a reason.

The problem is that life is mostly made up of the days we're waiting to get through.

Workdays. Errands. School drop-offs. Coffee runs. Grocery shopping. Dinner on the couch because nobody has the energy to cook something impressive.

If the good stuff only gets to come out for the exceptional days, we don't get to enjoy it very often.

I've never been particularly interested in that arrangement.

Everyday Luxury Is About What You Actually Use

When I talk about everyday luxury, I'm not talking about filling your life with expensive things.

In fact, I think it's almost the opposite.

I'd rather have one thing I genuinely love and use constantly than five things I bought because they were trendy, inexpensive or looked good on someone else.

Trends have a shelf life. We all have something hiding in a drawer that proves it. It was everywhere for a season, we absolutely had to have it, and now we're vaguely surprised every time we rediscover it.

The pieces that actually fit your style are different.

You reach for them over and over again. Eventually, you stop consciously choosing them at all. They're just yours.

That's where cost per wear becomes a much more useful way to think about what something costs. The piece that costs more upfront but gets worn hundreds of times can earn its keep far better than five less-expensive pieces that barely leave the jewelry box.

Everyday luxury isn't about spending more.

It's about actually enjoying what you spend your money on.

Permanent Jewelry Was Made for Everyday Life

Permanent jewelry fits naturally into the idea of everyday luxury because it's designed to become part of your actual life.

You don't have to remember to put your bracelet on in the morning. You don't have to decide whether your outfit is "nice enough" for it. You don't need a wedding, anniversary, birthday or vacation.

Building my little studio in Minnetonka has taught me something I didn't expect.

I thought I was creating a place where people in the Twin Cities could come for permanent jewelry and some of the other experiences I'd fallen in love with creating.

And technically, I did.

But my favorite moments aren't really about the jewelry.

They're watching two friends debate chains for each other. A mom and daughter deciding to get matching bracelets. Someone who came in convinced she wanted one thing trying something completely different and saying, "Oh. That's the one."

It's people slowing down for twenty minutes and choosing something because they genuinely like it.

No milestone required.

No justification required.

No committee determining whether Tuesday is important enough.

Maybe that's why this business fits me so well.

I was the kid who ate the Halloween candy immediately. Janice could still have half a bucket left at Thanksgiving, and I would have nothing but wrappers and absolutely no regrets.

Apparently I've been practicing everyday luxury for a very long time.
